
Join our Junior Field Rangers program to become a guardian of our natural environment while learning about sustainable recreation practices. Through this program, participants will develop leadership skills, foster a passion for conservation, and build a deep connection to the outdoors. Participants will engage in hands-on learning, community service, and educational activities to promote environmental stewardship.
Program Overview:
Pacoima Beautiful's Junior Field Rangers program offers a paid summer youth outdoors development opportunity for current high school students in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. Participants will gain valuable experience in land stewardship, data collection, conservation, and native wildlife and plant identification. This program provides hands-on learning and exposure to potential outdoor careers.

- Provided Gear: All necessary work gear will be supplied (hiking boots, a hat, PB shirt, and a hydration backpack).
- Transportation: Junior Field Ranger crew bosses will provide transportation to field sites from Pacoima Beautiful Headquarters.
- Meeting Location: Pacoima Beautiful Headquarters, Pacoima, CA.
Program Details, Time Commitment, and Requirements:
Eligibility: Open to all high school students in the Northeast San Fernando Valley with a 2.0 overall GPA and above.
Duration: Six (6) weeks, summer. For a total of 72 possible hours worked.
Physical Demands:
Participants should be comfortable walking and hiking on uneven terrain for several hours in outdoor conditions. Be prepared for exposure to sun, heat, and potential encounters with insects or wildlife.
Crew Boss Expectations of Junior Rangers:
Positive attitude, willingness to learn, punctuality, and respect for the environment.
Mandatory Events:
This program requires a strict time commitment, and attendance at all shifts is mandatory. Below are a few key events to note. Dates and times will be disclosed to selected applicants.

- Community Hike and Cleanup celebration
Responsibilities:
- Participate in outdoor fieldwork activities like trail maintenance and habitat restoration.
- Provide daily reports of fieldwork.
- Conduct trash assessment surveys and park visitor interviews.
- Work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to perform physical activity such as walking and hiking in outdoor environments.
What to Bring:
- Students must bring their own lunch
- Durable outdoor pants
- Additional water will be provided
Acceptance Contingencies:
- Returning participants are not eligible to apply
- Acceptance into the program is contingent upon a successful interview and selection.
- Final acceptance into the Junior Field Rangers program is contingent upon receiving a valid work permit from your high school. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of your work permit before the program begins.
